Equitable Resources
The Challenge: Equitable Resources, Inc., a natural gas company, was moving into a new office building on the North Shore of Pittsburgh that had no provisions for an energy recovery system.
The Solution: Berner proposed adding an energy recovery component to the HVAC system that would lower Equitable’s energy costs and improve Indoor Air Quality.
The Result: Berner’s energy recovery system generates 15-20% annual energy savings and allows for a dramatic reduction in the building’s heating and cooling load while providing 30,000 CFM of fresh air ventilation.

TPC Sawgrass
The Challenge: TPC Sawgrass, the home of professional golf’s annual “The Tournament Players Championship,” was designing a new clubhouse and faced several HVAC difficulties. They needed to dehumidify the air inside the clubhouse, they needed to find the space to house the HVAC equipment discreetly, and the solution needed to be in line with TPC Sawgrass’ strict ongoing sustainability mission.
The Solution: Berner’s customized desiccant energy recovery system, the TRICOIL®, was tied into the clubhouse’s Geothermal loop for year-round dehumidification and additional efficiency, all while using 140 tons less refrigeration than a conventional HVAC system. Berner’s unit was also small enough to be hidden in the building’s roof well recesses.
The Result: No outdoor air with moisture content greater than a 55-degree dew point is introduced inside of the clubhouse. John Mayes, the project consulting engineer says, “We like the TRICOIL® approach from the standpoint that it requires the industry’s least amount of refrigeration tonnage per CFM of outside air, plus there isn’t another Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) brand that would have fit in the tight roof well space the architect wanted to employ.”

Avalon Nursing Center
The Challenge: Avalon Nursing Center, an 83-bed, skilled nursing facility in New Castle, Pennsylvania wanted to reduce the risks caused by airborne germs and viruses, as well as eliminate the typical odors associated with nursing homes.
The Solution: Berner met with the staff of Avalon to identify their IAQ issues that were odor, air temperature, humidity control and condensation. Berner’s ventilation system allowed Avalon’s entire complex to be converted to 100% outside air using its energy efficient technology.
The Result: Berner’s system created a healthier, odor-free environment for patients, staff and visitors with air that contains fewer pathogens and more oxygen at lower monthly costs than what they had before the system was installed.
